Ivory refers specifically to an elephant's front teeth. Its main ingredient is a bone-like material made of calcium phosphate and an organism. This material is rich in elastin, which makes the whole tooth white, pure, thick, fine, smooth, elastic, and shiny. All these factors make ivory an excellent visual effect. The hardness of ivory is around 4.85. The longest ivory is said to be nine feet long. According to the origin of elephants can be divided into African ivory and Asian ivory. The hardness and quality of African ivory is slightly higher than that of Asian ivory. Asian ivory is whiter in colour and less cracked than African ivory.

The shape of the ivory is conical. One third of the whole ivory is hollow, called the mouth of the tube. The other two thirds are solid, the best part of dentin, and the best material for making and carving. On the smooth and smooth teeth, there are many natural textures. From the vertical surface, you can see as the tree rings like shallow lines; In the cross section, the cross lines extending from the center of the tooth to the periphery can be seen. The lines are like a diamond-shaped network, with thicker lines outward, a feature known as "tooth lines."

Ivory is widely used in carving buddhist statues, beads, seven treasures and other buddhist supplies, from the Ming dynasty began to prevail. Zhu yuanzhang, the emperor of the Ming dynasty, was a monk when he was young. This top-down influence allowed Buddhism to penetrate into every corner of society and become a popular religion in the Ming dynasty. During this period, ivory, as a rare and high-grade material, was essential for the production of carved buddhist statues, beads and other buddhist supplies. In the first dynasty of Ming dynasty, buddhist carvings are mainly made of Buddha, among which guanyin bodhisattva in various forms is the most immortal and the most exquisite. Because the ivory is white and moist, it is in line with the public ideal of avalokitesvara bodhisattva's great compassion, saving the suffering and suffering but not stained with the purity of the earth. The tooth carving Buddha of Ming dynasty USES knife fruity, dress elegant, line is concise, pay attention to expression, win with artistic conception.
